“How Many Kings” by the band Downhere, is a wonderful new contemporary Christian song that has quickly become one of my favorite new Christmas songs. Listen to the song here (click on the title of the song in the music player) and read the lyrics here:
Follow the star to a place unexpected
Would you believe after all we’ve projected
A child in a manger
Lowly and small, the weakest of all
Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mothers shawl
Just a child Is this who we’ve waited for?
Cause how many kings, stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
How many Gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Bringing our gifts for the newborn savior
All that we have whether costly or meek
Because we believe
Gold for his honor and frankincense for his pleasure
And myrrh for the cross he’ll suffer
Do you believe, is this who we’ve waited for?
(It’s who we’ve waited for)
How many kings, stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
How many Gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Only one did that for me All for me All for you All for me All for you

Jana,
Aren’t their lyrics really rich? I also really love the actual musical “lilt” that “How Many Kings” has to it. You’re right about “A Better Way”. It’s vocals are really beautiful.
A couple of comments above yours is the drummer from the band! He (Jeremy) actually came to my blog last year.
More word needs to get out about this talented band.
Thanks, you too, and thanks for coming to my blog. 🙂

My first love was DownHere’s rendition of Bring A Torch (spirit fm on youtube). I remember thinking this is what the season is all about. Immediately, I started looking for more songs and found How Many Kings, which brought me to tears, A Better Way, which has calmed me when I am feeling anxious and so many more of their songs.
This band is the best and while I have never listened to Christian music in the past, I find myself listening to their music and loving it. It is now part of my daily routine – prayer, bible reading and song.
Have a great and blessed day.

Isn’t it good? You’re welcome. I agree about the message, too, and my daughter really likes it as well.
Thanks for stopping by, Noreen.

I love the song “How Many Kings”, thanks for the words. I don’t think of it as a Christmas song, though. It is a good song, with a good message for all year long.

You’re welcome, Phil. Thanks for the encouragement.
The song was on my mind all through the Christmas season. The lyrics are fantastic.

Hi Kate,
EXCELLENT site! And thank you so much for posting the lyrics to “How Many Kings.” I’ve been hearing that song on Family Life Radio in Phoenix, AZ for a while now and I always catch the end of it. I have not heard “who” was singing it and I have tried repeatedly to search on the lyrics but could never find it.
Again, after hearing it today, I tried one more time and voila! I found your site, links to the group, and lyrics. So THANK YOU!
In His service,
Phil

Wow! I am so honored to have you here. I’ve been to your blog, too 🙂 I just listened to “How Many Kings” for the first time 4 days ago and I can’t get that song, “The Real Jesus” and “A Better Way” out of my mind. They are so wonderful! The harmonies are fun to sing and the tempo on How Many Kings has a nice “sway” feel to it, too. Drummers are great; they’re like the engine of the band. My son is also a drummer and guitarist, too.
The music on “How Many Kings” just builds so beautifully and the lyrics like, “How many greats have become the least for me?” just grab my heart. (I’m fascinated with music and songwriting as I’m also an amateur songwriter, with a song registered on CCLI).
I just showed my friends the lyrics to Downhere’s “The Real Jesus” to a friend who is struggling to know Jesus and is going through a very painful relationship breakup. I pray the Lord shows Himself to her in His love.
I’ve had so many hits to my blog just looking up How Many Kings (like a couple hundred over the last 2 1/2 days). I also added Downhere to my myspace blog (myspace.com/livingwatermark — I have it to blog with my son and his fiance) “friends” list and Downhere’s myspace was where I heard your other songs. You guys kind of appeared out of nowhere to me and I’m so glad to hear your music!
My favorite lines of The Real Jesus:
“Jesus loves the children, holds the lambs
Jesus prays a lot
Jesus has distinguishing marks on His hands
Oh, can anybody show me the real Jesus?
Oh, let Your love unveil the mystery of the real Jesus
If anybody walks behind the Good Shepherd
If anybody holds the hands that heal lepers
And if you recognize the eyes that see forever, please…”
Thanks so much for commenting. I will be purchasing this music soon and have been telling everyone about them. This last weekend I even changed my gmail IM status message to read “The Real Jesus” by Downhere. 🙂
God bless you,
Kate (Kathleen)

Hey Kate! Thanks for the blog post – I am the drummer for downhere and fellow blogger as well, and I just posted about this song as well. It’s been pretty cool to see how people are responding to this one – thanks for helping spread the word!

Lyrics to The Real Jesus
Jesus on the radio, Jesus on a late-night show
Jesus in a dream, looking all serene
Jesus on a steeple, Jesus in the Gallup poll
Jesus has His very own brand of rock and roll
Watched him on the silver screen
Bought the action figurine
But Jesus is the only name that makes you flinch
Oh, can anybody show me the real Jesus?
Oh, let Your love unveil the mystery of the real Jesus
Jesus started something new
Jesus coined a phrase or two
Jesus split the line at the turning point of time
Jesus sparked a controversy
Jesus, known for His mercy, gave a man his sight
Jesus isn’t white
Jesus loves the children, holds the lambs
Jesus prays a lot
Jesus has distinguishing marks on His hands
Oh, can anybody show me the real Jesus?
Oh, let Your love unveil the mystery of the real Jesus
If anybody walks behind the Good Shepherd
If anybody holds the hands that heal lepers
And if you recognize the eyes that see forever, please…
Jesus, Jesus
Oh, can anybody show me Jesus
Oh, let Your love unveil the glory, the real Jesus
Oh, can anybody show me the real Jesus?
Oh, let Your love unveil the glory of the real Jesus, the real Jesus
